The construction industry represents 40% of the carbon footprint globally. The production of cement and concrete is a significant component of this. Sandbar is the largest construction material producer worldwide, which means we're at the front runner to actually change something about this. We are looking for new additives and new chemistry to increase the strength of the cement. And reduce the carbon footprints. We started using Microsoft Discovery to find new molecules that can be used in cement additive formulation. We gathered almost 100,000 articles and patents from different fields to create a knowledge base in Microsoft Discovery. It allows us to connect in different agents that we are building in Microsoft phone very and simulation models that we have in house by just using a prompt my agents will orchestrate. The workflow for me and I can interact and ask questions and create new hypothesis. When we get a new molecule, that agent will visualize it so the researcher can have a better idea how it will interact with other molecules in the formulation. AI will lead to a new operating model for the future. It will give new possibilities in terms of speed to market. Without using this technology, it would have taken our researchers a year to create a knowledge base using a. It took us a couple of hours. We went from one or two hypothesis in a month to five to six hypothesis in six weeks. The impact of AI is huge. If we can deliver sustainable solutions to. Make the world a better home. That's why we're here.
A year of research done in a couple of hours and 62,000 patents plus 44,000 abstracts turned into testable hypotheses for low-carbon cement in about six weeks. For an industry behind such a large share of global CO₂, that’s a real breakthrough. Gregor Ellegast and I both come from the sealing and building materials industry and we see so much potential in Germany. Satya Nadella if AI shortens time-to-market for new materials this much, does the competitive advantage shift from who owns the best labs to who owns the best data? If so, Germany’s mid-sized and often family-owned companies with decades of proprietary formulation data in construction chemicals (some of them hidden champions), could be one of the most valuable untapped markets for Discovery. Is that on your radar?
Bienvenue dans mon pays : ici, l’innovation avance quand la clarté interne est plus forte que la pression du marché. Selon vous, quel secteur gagnerait le plus à retrouver cette clarté avant que la pression ne décide à sa place ?
You too, Xbox irl? Im planning on telling this one soon. And the construction equipment link is interesting.
How can a common man from Nigeria meet with you?
Construction is the last industry anyone expects to move fast. The slow part was never the chemistry, it was the decade you wait to see if a new material survives real weather. Shrink that loop from years to weeks and you change what a building can be.
A great example of AI helping solve challenges beyond the digital world. Faster materials discovery could make a real difference in building efficiency and sustainability Satya Nadella Sir 🫡
This is why we need more than just STEM degrees. The most complex problems in global deployment arent about chemistry - theyre about culture, language, and human behavior. To scale a breakthrough globally, you need leaders who understand both the science and the societal context
I love seeing AI applied to something as tangible as better building materials. I’d be curious to hear which part of the development process the team has found it most helpful with so far.
Saint-Gobain example raises another discovery question and Satya Nadella's post raises the most puzzling question : How do we select the people who can turn promising chemistry into results across geography, culture and language? Is a materials-science PhD enough, or do we also assess how people share expertise, challenge assumptions and entrust work across a network? At CLI, Collaborative and Entrusting Achieving Styles™ help examine that behavioral fit. How deliberately are we matching people to the jobs and colleagues that will turn discovery into deployment? https://connectiveleadership.com/#science
Good to see Microsoft Discovery speeding materials work at Saint-Gobain. Pairing data search with lab workflows can shave months off R&D. How are you capturing IP and shared knowledge as pace increases? Are data formats being standardized across teams?
