e-Invoicing mandates and updates: Sweden

Follow Sweden’s evolving e-Invoicing requirements, from public-sector rules to the latest B2B and ViDA developments. The post e-Invoicing mandates and updates: Sweden appeared first on OpenText Blogs .

October 2026

Sweden has now taken a significant step toward determining how ViDA—and potentially broader domestic e-Invoicing requirements—will be implemented.

In February 2026, the Swedish government launched a formal inquiry into the changes needed to implement ViDA’s digital reporting and e-Invoicing requirements in Swedish law. Significantly, the inquiry will also assess whether Sweden should introduce mandatory e-Invoicing and digital reporting for domestic transactions.

For now, there is still no domestic B2B e-Invoicing mandate in Sweden. The inquiry is ongoing, with its findings due by November 30, 2027.

Meanwhile, Swedish businesses involved in relevant cross-border B2B transactions within the EU will need to prepare for ViDA requirements taking effect on July 1, 2030. These requirements will introduce mandatory e-Invoicing and near-real-time digital reporting for applicable transactions.

March 2025

The EU has formally adopted its VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) package, bringing greater clarity to the future of e-Invoicing in Sweden and across the European Union.

Under ViDA, e-Invoicing and digital reporting will become mandatory for relevant cross-border B2B transactions within the EU from July 1, 2030. EU Member States will also have greater flexibility to introduce mandatory e-Invoicing for domestic transactions.

For Sweden, this means changes to national legislation will be required ahead of the 2030 deadline. However, Sweden has not yet introduced a domestic B2B e-Invoicing mandate. E-Invoicing requirements continue to apply primarily to public procurement, while B2B e-Invoicing remains voluntary.

The adoption of ViDA nevertheless marks an important milestone for Swedish businesses. Organizations should begin considering how their invoicing processes and technology will support structured e-Invoices and digital reporting as the new EU framework takes shape.

Sweden set to adopt mandatory e-Invoicing in line with the ViDA proposal

The Swedish authorities are the first to demonstrate compliance of the proposals laid out in the ViDA report. They have submitted a request to implement B2B and B2G e-invoicing and e-Reporting, in compliance with the policy options described by the ViDA.

No timeline has been published or indicated so far for the implementation of e-invoicing.
