What’s new in OpenText eDiscovery

Get the latest updates for OpenText eDiscovery to power faster, smarter analytics. The post What’s new in OpenText eDiscovery appeared first on OpenText Blogs .

OpenText™ eDiscovery (Axcelerate) is a flexible, powerful, end-to-end eDiscovery and investigations platform that helps legal teams get to facts that matter sooner and inform case strategy.

OpenText eDiscovery 26.4: Enhanced eDiscovery Aviator Agents, chronology automation, ingestion and performance improvements

OpenText eDiscovery 26.4 advances AI and automation to reduce manual work across review and investigation. More importantly, it helps legal teams move from finding relevant evidence to understanding what that evidence means for the case. This release also expands ingestion capabilities and delivers performance improvements.

This release introduces OpenText™ eDiscovery Aviator’s Deep Review Agent, a new BETA capability for Aviator Agents that harnesses search and retrieval tools in combination with Aviator LLM functionality to achieve rapid cross-document analysis across large responsive document sets, helping legal teams investigate issues, uncover broad themes and connections, and focus attention on the content that may matter most.

The release also continues the evolution of Chronology by automating the creation of Events using Aviator capabilities, strengthens Microsoft Purview ingestion, and delivers performance, administration, and usability improvements across the platform.

Turn relevance into understanding with Deep Review (Beta) (Cloud only)

Document review technology – including predictive coding and Aviator’s Review – help legal teams rapidly narrow a large collection to a more focused population of responsive or relevant documents and complete the document production process. But even after that work is done, attorneys can still face thousands of documents and a fundamental question: What does all this evidence tell me about my case? What happened and what evidence supports those findings?

The OpenText Deep Review Agent turns relevance into understanding, helping to determine what happened and what evidence supports those findings. It is designed to help bridge that gap by harnessing OpenText eDiscovery search and retrieval tools in combination with Aviator LLM functionality to achieve rapid cross-document analysis across large relevant responsive document sets of up to 30,000 documents.

So, while our Aviator Agent’s Research Assistant investigates a user-defined topic and synthesizes the findings, Deep Review expands the lens across a selected document population to connect facts, themes, and relationships and help legal teams understand what the evidence says in its entirety.

Key benefits of Deep Review:

  • Users can investigate issues, identify broad themes and connections, and generate a consolidated report that helps direct attention toward the most relevant content. Rather than looking only at individual documents in isolation, Deep Review provides a way to examine information across a larger selected evidence population and develop a more organized view of the themes and relationships within it. This can provide legal teams with a stronger starting point for investigation, case assessment, more focused review, and witness preparation.
  • Just as importantly, Deep Review incorporates human oversight into the process. Agent conversations provide transparency into tool calls and actions, while persistent conversation history lets users revisit, validate, and continue prior investigations. The result is a natural extension of the Aviator Agents introduced in 26.3: moving beyond automating individual eDiscovery tasks toward helping legal teams connect evidence across a larger document population and better understand the factual picture emerging from the documents.

Automation for Chronology Event creation

OpenText eDiscovery 26.4 continues the evolution of Chronology by reducing manual work involved in turning reviewed evidence into event timelines. Here are key features and benefits:

  • Users can now leverage Aviator LLM functionality to automatically populate critical details of Chronology Events from documents tagged responsive in Review & Analysis, saving time and effort to organize facts into events within the application rather than relying on Excel, Word, or third-party software that lacks the level of automation available in Chronology.
  • OpenText eDiscovery Aviator can also generate draft Chronology events from up to 100 documents selected on the Analysis page. Attorneys can zero-in on specific events or facts to prepare for depositions, hearings or trials.
  • The two-screen Chronology experience introduced in the prior release has also been enhanced with navigation controls. Users can move between documents linked to an Event as well as navigate between events, making it easier to work across the evidence and the developing timeline.

Greater context in OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Flex (Cloud only)

Aviator’s Flex continues to expand the ways legal teams can apply generative AI to matter-specific questions. In 26.4, prompts can now use document text and selected metadata together, or metadata alone, giving users more control over the information included when applying free-form natural-language prompts to review and investigation workflows.

The maximum Aviator Flex prompt length has also increased to 60,000 characters, providing additional room for detailed instructions and more complex matter-specific prompts.

Expanded Microsoft Purview ingestion support

OpenText eDiscovery 26.4 expands support for Microsoft Purview data. The Purview parser can now process data sets generated through the Microsoft Purview direct search export workflow.

A new Creation mode for cloud attachments can also extract the attachment version that was present when a message was sent. Creation mode helps clients review linked content in its original context by retrieving the attachment version that existed at or closest to the time the original email or chat was sent. This builds on the expanded modern-attachment support introduced in 26.3.

Additional review, investigation, performance, and usability improvements

  • Annotations for Chat: Users can use Spotlight viewers to create and manage Spotlight annotations for chat content.
  • Enhanced email coverage: Enhanced footer and thread detection email analysis
  • Faster ingestion: Improved anti-virus scanning throughput helps accelerate file ingestion through LaunchPad Data Management.
  • More self-service administration: Case managers can access the Continuous Active Learning administration page and set up CAL review without support from OpenText.
  • Excel viewer enhancements (Cloud): Users can select multiple sheets for redaction, with new warnings when the maximum number of redactions is approached or exceeded.

OpenText eDiscovery 26.3: Introducing agents and expanding control across AI, review, and data processing

OpenText eDiscovery 26.3 introduces agentic AI with OpenText eDiscovery Aviator Agents, giving legal teams a new way to use natural language to direct AI agents to automate complex multi-step workflows which can include search, review, analysis or synthesis steps. Unlike run of the mill chatbots that are only able to deliver a single response to a question, Aviator Agents automate complex eDiscovery processes with a single command.

The release also adds greater visibility and predictability for AI usage, expands Review in Context, and delivers enhancements across enrichment, ingestion, processing, translation, and data connectivity.

Introducing Agents (cloud only)

OpenText eDiscovery Aviator Agents bring agentic AI directly into OpenText eDiscovery. Users can describe a goal in natural language, and an agent can plan and execute the multi-step tasks required to complete it, including leveraging OpenText eDiscovery search and review and OpenText eDiscovery Aviator generative AI functionality. Each step is logged and traceable, allowing users to inspect the process, validate the output, and re-execute individual steps when needed.

A centralized dashboard provides access to pre-configured agentic templates for immediate use and enables teams to build fully custom agents for matter-specific workflows. Production-ready agents allow users to:

  • Custom Agent – Create custom agents to support workflows not covered by pre-configured templates.
  • Query Support – Develop, test, and refine search queries to find documents for a given topic
  • Person Discovery – Create query to identify documents containing a person’s direct PII
  • Research Assistant – Investigate a user-defined topic and synthesize the findings into a research report.
  • Timeline Reconstruction – Create a factual timeline of events from the document sets, provide document references to statements, as well as offering next step options

Additional OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Agents BETA templates

Additional templates, designed to support specific workflows and use cases are available in Beta. These can be used as inspiration for clients to create their own custom agents in order to:

  • Classification Quality Control – Assess accuracy of document review classifications and refine review criteria
  • Compliance Review – Review documents to identify non-compliance with a specified policy
  • Data Breach Investigation – Create report on potential PII exposure by identifying affected individuals and documents containing PII.
  • DSAR Report – Identify documents within a data set related to a data subject and extract third-party PII and create a report to support DSAR fulfillment.
  • Key Custodian Identification – Identify key custodians in a data set through analysis of communications, roles and relationships
  • Privilege Discovery – Identify documents that contain potentially privileged documents
  • Privilege Log –Determine privilege type and reason from an identified document set and create privilege log
  • Sentiment Discovery –Identify documents matching a target sentiment with a detailed findings report.
  • Sensitive Content Search – Compiles a list of documents containing sensitive information

Greater visibility and predictability for AI usage

A new OpenText eDiscovery Aviator token consumption dashboard gives administrators visibility into AI usage at the project and client levels. Users can filter usage by date and export detailed reports, with token totals updated every 24 hours.

Review and enrichment at greater scale

Review in Context, a feature that helps reviewers see how documents are connected (e.g., email threads, duplicates and related families), maintain context across the review, and tag related items consistently, now supports batches of any number of documents on parity with Review. A new toggle on the Assignment page allows users to easily change between standard Review and Review in-context and reflect the status at any point, making it easier to identify.

Translation and search-based enrichment jobs, including Aviator jobs, can now use duplicate information to reduce processing costs. Only one representative item in a duplicate group is processed, while every duplicate within the document scope receives the resulting enrichment. Improved handling of AWS Bedrock throttling also increases throughput for large language model requests.

Chronology productivity and visibility gains

The Chronology experience has also been expanded to help teams build and work with event timelines more efficiently. Users can now create chronology events in bulk using a template CSV file, making it faster to add multiple events and scale timeline development across larger matters.

The Chronology page now supports two-screen mode for a more focused review experience, while persistent filters and keyword chips in the Current Criteria panel make it easier to maintain context when reviewing filtered event lists. Users also have more control over generated summaries, with the ability to discard a summary when they do not want it displayed for certain documents tied to an event.

Chronology can now support up to 2,000 events, increased from 300, and the supported event date range has been expanded. Delete topic and Delete added person are now inactive when deletion is not possible because of an event association.

Expanded data ingestion and connector support

The Purview parser can now be configured to extract all versions of cloud, or “modern, attachments” during ingestion rather than only the latest version. The CMIS Exchange connector also expands collection support to calendar events and tasks or to-do objects, including cloud-attachment links embedded in inbox content, events, and tasks.

OpenText eDiscovery 26.2: Expanded capabilities across eDiscovery Aviator, Chronology, review, redaction, and ingestion

OpenText eDiscovery 26.2 delivers an enhancement to previous OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Rapid Exploration capabilities, deeper chronology tooling, broader language support, Excel redaction enhancement, and ingestion performance improvements.

  • MS Purview parser enhancements for more accurate and complete data processing from Purview sources
  • Parser enhancement to ensure that all content and nodes of XML files are captured
  • Google Vault exports parser enhances the processing of email and Google Drive data exported with Google Vault.

OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Flex feature (Beta launch 26.2), (Cloud only)

This new feature allows users to run any custom AI prompt against any set of documents in the collection and save the results directly to a custom text field in the database. Unlike previously released predefined Aviator features, Flex gives legal teams the freedom to ask exactly what a matter demands — and makes those AI-generated insights persistent, searchable, and available across the entire team for review, reporting, and trial preparation.

OpenText eDiscoveryCE 25.4: Introducing OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Rapid Exploration and enhanced review and chronology capabilities

OpenText is pleased to announce a powerful set of enhancements to OpenText™ eDiscovery cloud deployments, designed to accelerate legal workflows, improve review accuracy, and enhance collaboration.

This release introduces Rapid Exploration, a new Gen-AI-powered capability that transforms how legal teams uncover key documents, prioritizing issue-driven exploration over traditional document review. Alongside this innovation, we’ve added precision and recall quality metrics to OpenText™ eDiscovery Aviator Review, and enhanced OpenText eDiscovery Chronology with audit reporting capabilities. Together, these updates empower teams to work smarter, faster, and with greater confidence – whether you are investigating your data and evaluating your case, completing a review for production, or mapping the evidence against a timeline to understand the sequence of events and reveal patterns and insights.

  • Introducing OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Rapid Exploration (Cloud only)

A new way to uncover the key documents relating to issues in your case before committing to a full document review. Rapid Exploration fundamentally changes the “review before you know” dynamic by flipping the traditional sequence. Instead of reviewing documents to find issues, legal teams can now explore specific issues to find the most relevant documents and insights. Using Gen-AI technology combined with predictive algorithms, Rapid Exploration immediately dives deep into specific areas of concern, generating a comprehensive report that organizes critical documents by train of inquiry and provides the strategic intelligence needed for informed decision-making. This isn’t surface-level keyword searching—it’s sophisticated analysis that delivers information in the context of relationships and legal concepts.

  • Precision and recall quality metrics added to OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Review (Cloud only)

When the “Compare with human review” toggle is activated in the OpenText eDiscovery Aviator’s Review panel, users can view precision and recall quality metrics that compare Review findings against human tagging. This feature provides valuable insight into the accuracy and effectiveness of AI-assisted document review.

  • Expanded audit reporting in Chronology (Cloud only)

User and topic audit reports have been added to Chronology, providing detailed visibility into who performed which actions and when. These reports enhance traceability and support seamless collaboration across teams by allowing team members to track decisions, monitor document handling, and view when topics are added or removed from events in the Chronology timeline. With search and Smart Filter support, users can more easily search and filter Chronology items to zero in on key events and documents.

OpenText eDiscovery CE 25.2: Introducing eDiscovery Chronology for enhanced evidence organization

We’re excited to announce the latest update in OpenText eDiscovery CE 25.2, introducing a powerful new tool that transforms how legal teams organize and analyze evidence. Here’s what’s new:

OpenText eDiscovery Chronology

In modern litigation and investigations, organizing massive volumes of digital evidence chronologically to understand the who, what, where, and when of a matter can be daunting, labor-intensive, expensive, and potentially risky. The new OpenText™ eDiscovery Chronology addresses this challenge head-on.

This interactive chronological narrative building tool helps legal teams track, organize, and analyze evidence by date—with full control of event metadata and complete audit trail capabilities. With Chronology, legal teams can leverage technology to streamline an otherwise manual task and quickly gain a clearer understanding of the sequence of events that may make or break a case.

With integrated visual Chronology, legal teams can:

  • Easily identify potential gaps or inconsistencies in evidence earlier, reducing risks and unpleasant surprises
  • Save time by organizing events and facts without having to copy and paste text and link documents in Excel, Word, or third-party software
  • Quickly zero in on specific events or facts at any time, for faster, easier, and more thorough client reporting, early case assessment, and preparation for depositions, hearings, settlement discussions, and trial

Chronology is a key feature that has been frequently requested by our customers and represents a significant enhancement to our platform’s capabilities.

In addition to the new Chronology feature, OpenText continues to release enhancements to our existing capabilities.

OpenText eDiscovery Aviator Key Document Summary – Now exportable!

Initially released in April 2024, Aviator Key Document Summary empowers legal teams to create an AI-generated summary of key documents, complete with links to the documents, for improved document review efficiency and rapid insight into the case. Now with CE 25.2, legal teams can more easily share document summaries with team members and clients with the ability to export Key Document Summaries, complete with working document links.

Aviator Review – More intuitive than ever

In our ongoing effort to increase efficiency and automate first-pass review, we have simplified the OpenText eDiscovery Aviator Review process to two simple steps:

  • Input your review criteria
  • Identify the designated document set on which you want Aviator Review to run

It is really that easy, and after the Aviator results are returned, legal teams have the option to quickly QC the document set using the “compare with human review toggle” and selecting the coded review field to be used for comparison.

Expanded bulk redaction capabilities

Accurate and consistent redaction of privileged, confidential, or sensitive information across all document formats is a critical component for reducing production risks. Inadvertent production of privileged or sensitive information is a legal team’s worst nightmare. As the type of data involved in litigation and investigations continues to become more diverse—going far beyond email and Word documents—it’s essential that bulk redaction tools keep pace. That’s why we’re pleased to expand OpenText eDiscovery bulk redaction to support the chat-specific redaction view. We have also added support for Social Security Number patterns in the Bulk Redaction wizard for the native Excel viewer, the audio/video viewer (Cloud only), and the HTML chat viewer.

Additional new redaction capabilities include:

  • New “change redaction” functionality for the near native Excel viewer, the audio/video viewer (Cloud only), and the HTML chat viewer
  • The ability to centrally manage the addition and deletion of redaction reasons from within the Review & Analysis module
  • The addition of a dedicated Regular Expressions (RegEx) tester to support users writing their own customized RegEx for bulk redaction
  • An improved RegEx pattern search for birthdates

These updates in OpenText eDiscovery CE 25.2 represent our ongoing commitment to providing powerful, user-friendly tools for modern eDiscovery workflows. By introducing new functionality and enhancing existing key features, we’re responding to our most frequent customer requests and helping legal teams work more efficiently and effectively than ever before, delivering better outcomes for their clients and organizations.

OpenText™ eDiscovery CE 25.1: Expanding capabilities and streamlining workflows

We’re excited to announce the latest updates in OpenText eDiscovery CE 25.1, delivering enhanced GenAI functionality, improved redaction tools, and new data integration features. Here’s what’s new:

Transparent GenAI decision-making
