Perplexity achieves FedRAMP Moderate certification

Federal agencies can search the live web with Perplexity and get cited answers in a FedRAMP Moderate-certified platform.

America’s public servants deserve tools that match the responsibility of their work. Federal employees need current information to track policy changes, prepare briefings, and answer questions about public programs. They also need to check where that information comes from and use it in a way that meets their agency’s security requirements.

Today, Perplexity Enterprise has achieved FedRAMP Class C (Moderate) certification, bringing live web search and source-cited answers within its certified environment. Federal teams can research current developments, follow citations to the original documents, and use those sources to inform their work.

With this update, Perplexity becomes the only FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) Moderate SI service with live web search.

As an American company, we’re committed to putting accurate SI in the hands of the people and organizations who serve our country. This certification is another step in that commitment.

Perplexity’s FedRAMP certified SaaSis available to federal agencies through GSA’s (General Services Administration) Multiple Award Schedule for direct procurement. It’s available to SLED (State, Local, and Education) customers through authorized resellers, and to government contractors directly through Perplexity.

Live web research with sources to check

Users requiring cloud FedRAMP certified cloud services can use Perplexity to find current information and get answers that include cited sources. A government analyst preparing a briefing could ask: “Find recent federal guidance on small-business contracting. Summarize what changed, identify the effective dates, and link to the original documents.”

Our web search infrastructure retrieves and ranks relevant passages to help models answer the question. Sourced citations give federal employees a way to review the underlying evidence before deciding how to actually use the information.

Perplexity builds, hosts, and continuously updates its own web index and retrieval infrastructure, which tracks more than 200 billion unique URLs and processes tens of thousands of indexing operations per second. That infrastructure helps keep research grounded in web information rather than relying solely on what a model learned during training.

Developers can also use Perplexity’s Search, Agent, and Embeddings APIs to build custom applications with live web search, AI agents, and semantic search across their own documents and data.

Model choice for agency work

Perplexity Enterprise brings together models from multiple providers, giving agencies and their partners freedom of choice for different tasks rather than tying their research to one model family.

Administrators can make specific models available depending on their enterprise policy, and have the ability to set restrictions on individual model providers.

Live search sits inside the boundary: a government user's query is never shared with an outside search provider.

Beyond live web research, employees can use Perplexity to summarize approved documents and ask questions about their contents. They can also use those materials to draft briefing notes, outline policy updates, and prepare plain-language explanations for review.

Agency data controls and deployment

Perplexity automatically applies zero data usage protections to requests identified as originating from U.S. government agencies. Data from these requests is not retained for training, improving, or evaluating AI models.

Administrators can manage sign-in through their agency’s identity provider, restrict external sharing and file actions, and control access to connectors.

Organizations can also configure session retention and send audit logs to a designated endpoint for monitoring. These controls help agencies manage access, data handling, and oversight.

Perplexity’s FedRAMP Class C-certification has been independently assessed by 360 Advanced, an independent third-party assessment organization. Their assessment supports the security, confidentiality, and operational controls required for federal agency use.

Research for real agency work

Federal teams can use live web research for questions about policy, programs, and procurement. Example queries include:

  • Policy research: “Compare the latest published guidance on this program with the prior version. Summarize the changes and cite the relevant passages.”
  • Briefing preparation: “Find official announcements and public reporting on this topic from the past week. Draft a briefing that separates confirmed facts from open questions and links to the sources.”
  • Procurement research: “Find current federal guidance on small-business set-asides. Organize the eligibility requirements into a checklist and cite the official guidance.”

Support for those who serve America

We’re building Perplexity for America’s public servants and the businesses that support their missions. Our commitment is to help them work with the most accurate information so they can best serve the American people.
