Introducing spending alerts: Get notified when your spend crosses thresholds you set

Mux spending alerts email your team when your organization’s spend crosses a threshold you set. Learn how to set up alerts.

With usage-based pricing, your bill moves with your product. When a video takes off, that’s a good problem to have. When a test live stream gets left running, you’d rather hear about it early than at the end of the month.

That’s why we built spending alerts, available today for Mux customers. Set the thresholds that matter to you, choose who gets the emails, and we’ll let them know when your spend crosses each one.

Say you’re adding Mux to your website, allowing users to upload and watch videos, and expect to spend about $200 on Mux this month. By mid-month, you know you should be halfway through your spend estimate. You set up 3 spend thresholds, $100, $200, and $400, and make sure you and your lead developer get the alerts.

If your $100 alert comes mid-month and $200 at the end of the month, they’re right on schedule with your expectations. Your $400 alert is your backstop. If that comes through or your other alerts show up earlier than expected, you’ll want to dig into what’s causing the increased spend. Have you had more site visitors? Are bots hitting your site? Did your project make it to the front page of Hacker News?

To track spend, expected or not, head to your Mux dashboard > Organization Settings > Billing > Alerts. There you can set up to three dollar-based alerts. You can also add team members who should be notified via email when your organization’s total spend hits your alert thresholds. Those team members will need to be users on your Mux org to receive the email.

You'll only receive alerts if you've reached your set threshold. You can modify the thresholds and recipients at any time. Read our guidefor more details.

Alerts tell you when spend crosses a line, but sometimes you want a limit that takes action. That’s why we’re also exploring custom spending caps. What does a cap mean to you? What should happen when the cap is met? If you’re interested in learning more and giving us some more insights on your use case, let us know.
