Rethinking What Freedom of Movement Feels Like for Women

Most women know the unspoken checklist before getting into a car. They consider their surroundings, decide whether to chat or pretend to be on a phone call, and send a quick text to a friend with their live location, just in case. Getting from one place to another is rarely just a matter of distance; it comes with a quiet, constant layer of preparation and mental energy.

At Waymo, we believe women should get that energy back.

Our new film looks at what happens when the stress is taken out of the journey. Waymo allows our riders to take a work call, sit in total silence, or play music as loud as they want. We're offering a space entirely on our riders' own terms.

Riders are sharing that this shift matters. Our data shows that over half of women riders across established service markets reported that Waymo improves their sense of personal safety. Having a space where riders are in control of their environment makes a real difference.

To share this story, we were proud to partner with a women-led creative and production crew. The film was directed by Mollie Mills, with cinematography by Autumn Durald, and brought to life by executive producer Onye Anyanwu, editor Mah Ferraz, and music producer Shakari "Trakgirl" L.

How people move through the world is deeply personal. Women’s experiences and perspectives are an important part of how we think about the rider experience, including the value of having more choice, comfort and confidence when traveling.

Because the journey is personal.

Because having more choice in how we get around matters.
