Agentic AI i not ju t a technology hift. It require organization to rede ign work, develop people and combine human and AI trength .

As organizations explore the opportunities of agentic AI, one question is becoming increasingly important. Are we truly prepared for the changes it will bring to the workforce?

To help answer this question, the Future Makers Research Community (FMRC) at Atos Group and Radboud University conducted a study on the human and organizational impact of agentic AI. As a part of the study, researchers interviewed experts to explore how organizations can prepare for the next stage of AI adoption. The findings highlight the implications for organizations, leaders and employees as agentic AI becomes part of the modern workplace.

In this article, we highlight some of the key findings from this research and seek to shed light on human readiness for the agentic enterprise and its digital workplace. Take a look.

Technology – only the starting point

Much of the current conversation around agentic AI focuses on technology. Autonomous agents, reasoning models and increasingly capable AI systems dominate headlines, while organizations are actively identifying new use cases and productivity gains. Yet as AI rapidly becomes embedded in enterprise operations, a more fundamental question is emerging.

Are organizations redesigning themselves as quickly as technology is evolving?

For many organizations, the answer is still no.

Across industries, businesses are moving beyond experimenting with generative AI (GenAI) toward deploying AI agents that can plan, coordinate and execute work. Product teams are exploring autonomous development assistants. Consultants are using AI to analyze information and prepare deliverables. HR departments are experimenting with AI-supported recruitment and career guidance, while workforce managers are investigating how AI can improve resource allocation and project staffing. In many organizations, AI is moving beyond isolated tasks and increasingly becoming an active participant in enterprise workflows. This changes the nature of work for almost everyone.

The game-changer: People, not technology

The research showed that the greatest challenge is no longer whether AI is capable enough, but whether organizations are prepared for the organizational changes that follow.

These observations were reinforced through conversations with senior professionals across the Atos Group working in AI strategy, responsible AI, human resources, career management and workforce and resource management. Although each perspective reflected a different part of the organization, they converged on one remarkably consistent conclusion: the future of agentic AI is fundamentally about people, not technology.

One theme emerged almost immediately. None of the discussions centered on replacing employees, but focused on how human contribution is changing. As AI becomes increasingly capable of analyzing information, coordinating routine activities and generating first drafts, people create value elsewhere. They are interpreting complex situations, making judgment calls, building relationships and translating insights into decisions. Rather than removing humans from the workflow, AI shifts them to where humans can contribute most.

This shift affects different parts of the organization in different ways.

For consultants and client-facing professionals, AI increasingly accelerates preparation while human expertise remains essential for understanding client contexts, facilitating conversations and delivering strategic advice. For product developers and AI engineers, the challenge extends beyond building intelligent systems. Success increasingly depends on designing solutions that fit real organizational workflows, enable effective human oversight and earn user trust.

For HR leaders and workforce managers, agentic AI raises new questions about capability development, role redesign and future talent. If AI increasingly performs the operational work through which junior employees traditionally learn, how do organizations continue developing the judgment and experience needed for future leadership? And for business leaders, the challenge is broader still. AI adoption is no longer simply a technology program. It is becoming an organizational transformation that requires new operating models, governance structures and leadership approaches that deliberately combine the strengths of humans and intelligent agents.

This represents a fundamental shift in how organizations should think about AI adoption.

Shifting priorities in a dynamic landscape

Rather than asking which individual tasks can be automated, the focus increasingly turns to redesigning complete workflows around complementary capabilities. AI contributes speed, scalability and analytical power. Humans continue to provide context, creativity, ethical judgment, stakeholder management and accountability. Most importantly, it is noteworthy that this transformation cannot be addressed by technology teams alone. It requires cross-team collaboration — among business leaders, HR professionals, AI specialists, product teams and employees across the organization. The organizations that succeed will be those that redesign work holistically instead of implementing AI in isolated parts of the business.

Perhaps that is the most important lesson emerging from both industry research and organizational practice.
