Bridging the Digital Divide: 25 Years of Empowerment in Panama

Cisco Networking Academy celebrates its 25-year presence in Panama. From partnering with indigenous communities to setting new educational standards for technical education, we’re bridging the country's digital divide one certification at a time.

The Cisco Networking Academy program has changed millions of lives, opening doors to opportunity through its industry-recognized courses and certifications. For the people of Panama, joining the program’s community 25 years ago has had an immeasurable impact.

Background:

In 2000, the world entered a new century, with new technology and a new way of thinking. In Panama, the country saw its first Cisco Networking Academy, connecting interested students nationwide with the training needed to thrive in an ever-changing, tech-driven economy.

The academy’s early phase began to democratize technical education. With the introduction of Packet Tracer, students were able to gain hands-on experience in a simulated lab environment.

Impact/Special Project

As the program grew, a strategic partnership with the Technological University of Panama (UTP) became the driving engine of the program’s trajectory in the country. By integrating the CCNA certification into graduation requirements for the Faculty of Systems Engineering, the program shifted from a simple extracurricular to a recognized educational standard.

During this time, Cisco Networking Academy expanded significantly in Panama, partnering with institutions such as Instituto Nacional de Formación Profesional y Capacitación para el Desarrollo Humano (INADEH), Instituto Técnico Superior Especializado (ITSE), Universidad Latina de Panama, and Universidad Tecnologica Oteima.

Over the years, the academy has focused on inclusivity and using technology as a tool for social equity. Ambitious projects, like creating community networks in indigenous zones, brought much-needed digital skills to the country’s most remote areas. Additionally, national hackathons further encourage participation in the program.

Looking towards the future

As Panama celebrates its 25 anniversary and recognition as a Premier+ partner, the future looks bright. The country’s recent participation in region-wide events like Cyber Games and the launch of an updated curriculum proves that their efforts are far from over. The academy’s growth over the decades proves that quality technical education can evolve with innovation while staying just as impactful. With more than 50,000 skilled, certified students, the program offers a strong promise of a more connected, qualified, and empowered generation.
