Over 12 years, Amazon’s legal teams have provided free help across 26 countries, from a legal clinic supporting victims of scams to veteran support programs. Inside the 2026 Pro Bono Report.

Key takeaways

  • Amazon’s pro bono program has provided more than 90,000 hours of free legal service since 2014.
  • More than 2,500 legal and public policy professionals have volunteered across 26 countries.
  • Highlights from the 2026 Pro Bono Report include a scam victim legal clinic and veteran discharge upgrades.

Pro bono is part of what we owe as lawyers. The ethical codes governing our profession call for it. And while that requirement isn‘t enforced, at Amazon we take it seriously. Across much of the world, most people who need legal help can‘t afford it, and legal professionals can close that gap in a way almost no one else can.

When I started Amazon’s pro bono program in 2014, I wanted to make this work easy to find and easy to join, with a wide menu of matters so that a corporate lawyer who may never set foot in a courtroom can still contribute their legal and technical expertise in a way that fits.

Pro bono is both an obligation and a privilege. In the 12 years since the inception of the program, more than 2,500 members of our legal and public policy teams across 26 countries have collectively provided more than 90,000 hours of service, with more than 10,000 hours accounted for in the last year alone.

I take cases myself. Through the King County Bar Association’s Records Project, I work with clients to vacate old convictions that keep them from a job or an apartment, and I plan to keep doing pro bono work for as long as I practice law. I ask the same of everyone across our legal and public policy organization. The program exists so that people can find their own way in.

Today, we share our 2026 Pro Bono Report, which reflects the impact of our work over the last year.

Highlights from Amazon’s 2026 Pro Bono Report: Free legal service the company has provided

Scam Justice Legal Clinic

The Scam Justice Legal Clinic is a first-of-its-kind pro bono initiative that provides free legal help to victims of online scams, a collaboration between Amazon, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, the Pro Bono Institute, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Institute for Marketplace Trust. The clinic helps victims understand their legal options, document their cases, and protect themselves from further fraud. In 2026, the Washington State Bar Association recognized the clinic with its APEX Award for Legal Innovation, calling it a model for community-driven legal service delivery. Starting in 2027, the National Center for Victims of Crime will carry this important work forward, expanding support for scam survivors nationwide.

United Nations

In partnership with DLA Piper, Amazon legal and public policy professionals contributed to a multiyear project supporting financial inclusion for refugees under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The project produced practical legal research and guidance used by practitioners working to connect displaced populations with financial services, a prerequisite for stability and self-sufficiency in a new country. This work shows what corporate legal departments and global law firms can accomplish together on sustained, substantive pro bono projects.

Protecting children through legal education

The India legal team’s program on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act reached 7,243 students across 29 schools, engaging 728 teachers through interactive sessions on recognizing and reporting abuse. Separately, a Cyber Safety Awareness initiative launched in partnership with Amazon India’s CSR team trained 10,186 students across 42 sessions in four major metros—Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore—with 75% of sessions prioritizing government and low-income schools.

Doctors Without Borders

In partnership with K&L Gates, our volunteers provided legal guidance for the development of a nonprofit international online medicine marketplace to facilitate access to prescribed medication.

Mapping Prejudice

Our international legal teams’ custom AI application continues to support the Mapping Prejudice Project, reviewing hundreds of historical real estate deeds to identify racially restrictive housing covenants. The work directly supports reparative justice efforts, including Washington State‘s Covenants Homeownership Account Act.

Legal AI in the classroom

For the third consecutive year, the China Stores Legal team participated in the RICC & CO. Pro Bono Competition as topic contributors and judges. This year, the competition added a new “National College Student Legal AI Application” track, centered on innovative student applications of AI in legal contexts. The team contributed more than 12 topics across two tracks.

Mary’s Place

Our legal clinic inside the eight-floor family shelter at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters continues to serve guests with legal applications, housing debt resolution, and day-to-day legal questions.

Election protection

Our teams will again staff nonpartisan election protection hotlines for the 2026 cycle, answering voter questions about polling locations, ballot issues, and rights at the polls.

Supporting veterans

Our attorneys help veterans upgrade less-than-honorable discharges, a status that can bar them from healthcare, education, and employment. Partnering with the National Veterans Legal Services Program and The Veterans Consortium, Amazon’s legal team took on discharge-upgrade cases this year, including one that secured an upgrade for an Army veteran, restoring his access to benefits.

France – Les Restos du Coeur

We launched monthly three-hour legal clinics at Les Restos du Coeur in Paris, pairing Amazon legal team members with Morgan Lewis attorneys to provide in-person legal assistance to underserved individuals on labor, housing, and administrative matters.

What's next for Amazon's pro bono program

When I started this program, the goal was to make it possible for our teams to serve their communities through the skills they already had. Today, the program spans six continents, incorporates AI tools, partners with nonprofits and legal firms around the world, and has received international recognition for the work achieved by volunteers.

The need for pro bono legal services is greater than it has ever been, and the pace is not slowing. I intend to keep showing up for my own clients while our teams keep building the infrastructure that makes this work possible at scale.
