From AI-enabled imaging and predictive healthcare to augmented reality, robotics, and wearable technologies, Philips' Chief Medical Officer for Diagnosis & Treatment shares how AI is transforming healthcare on Earth – and helping shape the future of care beyond our planet.
At this year's LEAP East, one of Asia's leading technology conferences, Dr. Atul Gupta, Philips' Chief Medical Officer for Diagnosis & Treatment, explored how AI is already changing the way clinicians diagnose, treat, and predict disease. He then pushed that vision to the extreme, asking what healthcare might look like when the nearest hospital is 100 million miles away.
In his keynote, How AI could save your life…even 100 million miles away, Dr. Gupta addressed one critical question: how to harness the power of AI responsibly to save lives rather than put them at risk.
"In healthcare, we've got to build AI the right way, not the fastest way," he said.
Drawing on real-world examples, Dr. Gupta showed how AI is helping to deliver better care for more people – from empowering clinicians in remote settings with AI-enabled imaging and connecting them to global expertise, to guiding complex procedures through augmented reality and robotics, and predicting life-threatening conditions before they occur through wearable technologies.
He then explored how solutions being developed today to improve care on Earth could one day support astronauts on deep-space missions, and why solving healthcare's toughest challenges could ultimately benefit billions of people around the world."If we can solve healthcare for a crew 140 million miles away, we should be able to do it right here for patients who might live three days away from the nearest hospital.”
Following his keynote, Dr. Gupta met with teams at NASA Mission Control to discuss the future of healthcare for deep space missions, and how advances in AI, imaging, remote collaboration, and predictive care could help support astronaut health far from Earth.
