Twilio Video Media SDK Powers Smarter Customer Engagement

Today, we are launching the Twilio Video Media SDK in Public Beta. This new server-side SDK helps businesses and developers connect live video experiences to AI by securely streaming real-time audio and video from Twilio Video Rooms to their backend systems. This launch is part of our commitment to building a trusted foundation for AI-enabled customer engagement, giving businesses the tools to create more intelligent, responsive, and connected customer experiences.

Imagine a customer reaching out in a high-stakes moment where text alone is not enough. A chatbot may help with simple questions, but some situations require visual context, empathy, and human expertise. That is where a real-time video call, supported by AI, can help teams provide faster answers and more personalized support.

Why does this matter? Many customer conversations are now handled by AI agents through phone or chat, but there are still important moments that need a real human connection. When you need to see what is happening, show something, or truly understand a problem, video is the most personal and effective way to help.

With the Twilio Video Media SDK, you can build smarter, more secure video experiences that still feel personal. You can add new features with AI, keep private information secure, and make your support teams more effective without extra setup required for your customers.

How the Twilio Video Media SDK works

The Twilio Video Media SDK is a server-side software package that lets your app connect directly to a Twilio Video Room as a secure, virtual participant. This architecture allows your backend to receive individual audio and video tracks directly, without complex workarounds or client-side rendering.

This approach brings important benefits for both businesses and customers:

  • Secure backend access to media: Individual audio and video tracks can be routed to your secure backend, which keeps sensitive information private and can support security and privacy requirements, including use cases subject to HIPAA and GDPR.
  • AI logic across channels: Teams can use the same AI logic (for example, transcriptions or sentiment analysis) across chat, messaging, voice, and video, so customers and support teams do not lose context when switching channels, allowing support to continue without interruption.
  • More room for experiment: Developers can test new AI models, prompts, and workflows, making it easy to try new ideas and add features without needing to rebuild your video systems.

What you can build with the Video Media SDK

The Twilio Video Media SDK empowers you to deliver intelligent, secure, AI-driven video and audio experiences. By making your backend a virtual participant in every call, you unlock a wide array of use cases:

  • Multimodal AI Assistants: Deliver smarter conversational agents by connecting live audio and video to frontier AI models. Your AI can both see and hear users during calls and keep context across SMS, voice, and video.
  • Ambient Healthcare Documentation: Stream consultation audio to clinical transcription engines in real time. Instantly generate secure, HIPAA-compliant clinical notes directly in EHR systems.
  • Remote Verification & Field Inspection: Feed live video to custom computer vision models for real-time KYC identity checks, damage assessments, or object detection—improving speed and accuracy during service calls.
  • Server-Side Quality & Compliance Checks: Run visual inspections, interpreter appearance audits, and content moderation server-side—ensuring quality and compliance without draining device battery or impacting call performance.
