Tieto Caretech and Synplan partner on AI-powered workforce schedu

The combination of Lifecare Workforce Management and Synplan’s AI-powered shift planner will make it easier for health and social care services to deploy staff

Press release, 4 November 2026

The combination of Lifecare Workforce Management and Synplan’s AI-powered shift planner will make it easier for health and social care services to deploy staff and skills where they are needed most.

Tieto Caretech has entered into a strategic partnership with Synplan. Through the collaboration, Synplan’s AI-powered workforce scheduling technology will be integrated with Tieto Caretech’s workforce planning solution, Lifecare Workforce Management. The Synplan integration will currently only be offered to Lifecare Workforce Management customers in Norway. The aim is to provide health and social care services with a more comprehensive tool for workforce planning, reducing manual work and enabling better use of available skills and resources.

Health and social care services face a challenging combination of growing demand, shortages of qualified professionals and increasing pressure to use resources efficiently. At the same time, many managers spend considerable time creating staff rosters, covering absences and managing ongoing changes.

The partnership between Tieto Caretech and Synplan aims to address this challenge by connecting a robust resource management system directly with intelligent workforce scheduling.

Lifecare Workforce Management brings together information on staffing requirements, competencies, working hours, absences, annual leave and employee preferences. Synplan’s technology uses this data to generate roster proposals based on the organisation’s actual needs, available resources, competencies and applicable rules.

Managers and planners review the proposed rosters and make the final decisions. AI therefore serves as decision support rather than replacing professional and managerial judgement.

“By combining our robust resource management system with a market-leading AI-powered roster generator, we can address one of the most complex and time-consuming tasks in health and social care in a smarter way. The goal is not only to make planning more efficient, but also to free up time for leadership and help ensure that the right skills are in the right place at the right time,” says Hanne Støre Valeur, Head of Norway at Tieto Caretech.

From reactive planning to better decision support

The integration between Lifecare Workforce Management and Synplan enables secure and efficient data flows between the solutions. This means that roster proposals generated and refined in Synplan can be used directly in operational resource management, without unnecessary manual processes between the systems.

Synplan’s technology can also analyse historical data and identify patterns in areas such as absence and staffing requirements. This can make it possible to plan earlier and more proactively, for example by building appropriate staffing buffers ahead of periods when higher absence levels or increased demand are expected.

Rosters can also be planned across units, helping organisations make better use of available resources and competencies. A systematic approach to employee preferences and availability can also contribute to a more predictable and equitable distribution of shifts and workloads.

“Together with Tieto Caretech, we can make advanced AI-powered workforce scheduling an integrated part of day-to-day resource management. This provides organisations with a stronger basis for decision-making and enables them to move from time-consuming manual planning towards a more proactive and data-driven way of working,” says Lars Dahle, CEO of Synplan.

Potential for significant benefits

Findings compiled by Synplan indicate that the effective use of automated workforce scheduling can deliver significant benefits. Reported results include reductions of up to 80% in overtime, up to 66% lower temporary staffing costs and 31% more time freed up for leadership.*

Optimised workforce planning can also contribute to lower sickness absence, a better working environment, more effective use of competencies and a more equitable distribution of shifts.

For Tieto Caretech and Synplan, the partnership is therefore about more than automating today’s roster planning. It is about enabling more intelligent and comprehensive resource management. To ensure value for users, the combined solution has been tested and piloted in collaboration with customers and is now ready and already in use by several Lifecare Workforce Management customers in Norway.

The ambition is simple: less time spent making the roster work and more time for leadership, employees and high-quality patient care.

*Figures from an assessment carried out by Synplan. Results will vary between organisations and depend on factors including organisational structure, data quality, standardised working processes, management commitment and how the technology is implemented.
