OEM server range featuring brand name servers from Dell Technologies

The flagship DX294 expands our DX-Line with a server from renowned manufacturer Dell Technologies.

The DX-Line, with its flagship model, the DX294, expands our lineup of bare metal servers to include high-performance brand name systems and opens new possibilities for customers with particularly compute-intensive workloads. The DX294 is equipped with an Intel® Xeon® 6 processor and offers 86 cores.

Why we chose the Dell PowerEdge R470

As part of the modernization of our brand server offerings, we conducted an in-depth evaluation of solutions from various vendors. We tested the devices in our own internal environments to gain a reliable, realistic picture of how the systems perform under typical workload conditions. In the end, we chose the Dell PowerEdge R470 with an Intel® Xeon® 6 processor.

A key factor is Intel's current processor platform, which supports high core counts in a single-socket configuration. In previous server generations, high core counts were only possible with dual-socket systems. The Intel Xeon SP platform now offers up to 86 cores per socket. This architecture greatly reduces complexity. All cores fit in a single system, so there is no need to spread them across multiple sockets. The result is a clearer, simpler system structure that is more efficient to manage in day-to-day operation.

For storage, we also deliberately chose a lean solution. We use software RAID with no dedicated RAID controllers, which reduces the complexity of our systems. In addition, iDRAC provides an integrated management solution for remote server administration and monitoring.

We wanted to realign our server portfolio around current processor platforms to deliver more computing power per system while reducing the complexity of our systems.Sebastian Willer, Director Product & Marketing, Hetzner

Close partnership with Dell Technologies and Thunder-IT

Alongside technical criteria, our long and successful collaboration with Dell Technologies played an important role in the decision. We have been partners since 2012, when Dell Technologies first delivered servers to us. Since then, we have sourced around 20,000 servers in total. They run in our bare metal offering and form the platform for Hetzner Cloud.

Our long and successful collaboration with Hetzner is built on trust, continuity, and close technical exchange. Hetzner has consistently relied on Dell Technologies as its partner in the dedicated server business for more than a decade, and that speaks to the quality of our collaboration.John Sobol, Head of CSP, Dell Technologies

This partnership proved itself again in the current project. We carried it out in close collaboration with Dell Technologies, Intel, and the IT service provider Thunder-IT, a Dell Technologies Titanium Partner.

Delivering infrastructure projects like this requires close coordination between technical design, validation, and logistics.Jochen Rübler, Managing Director, Thunder-IT

Thunder-IT acts as our technical interface partner and helps in particular with working out the system configurations. The IT service provider also handles important logistics tasks. Dell Technologies supplies the servers in smaller batches. Thunder-IT consolidates them centrally and ships them in bundled deliveries to our data centers.

Expanding the top end of our portfolio

The DX294 is available to our customers in two configurations. One comes with 256 GB DDR5 RAM ECC reg. and 2 x 960 GB NVMe SSD Datacenter Edition, the other with 512 GB DDR5 RAM ECC reg. and 4 x 1.92 TB NVMe SSD Datacenter Edition. Customers can also request custom configurations in larger quantities through our Custom Solutions service.

"With the servers we build ourselves, we cover up to 48 cores," explains Willer. "With the new servers from Dell Technologies, we can now extend our offering to higher performance classes and close the gap for especially compute-intensive workloads.“

Dedicated server infrastructure as the backbone of digital sovereignty

In our modern, energy-efficient data centers in Nuremberg, Falkenstein, and Helsinki, we offer dedicated and virtualized server infrastructure built for performance, reliability, and efficiency. With our bare metal servers in particular, we hit the sweet spot between running your own data centers and highly abstracted cloud environments. With this, we give companies a high degree of autonomy without them having to invest in costly data center infrastructure themselves. With the new server generation, we can now extend this offering to especially compute-intensive applications.
