From threat intelligence to business protection: Responding with IBM Concert Protect

Learn how IBM Concert Protect helps organizations respond to China-linked cyber threats with application context, proof of exploitability and automated remediation.

A new threat advisory brings a familiar challenge: knowing attackers are exploiting vulnerabilities is not the same as knowing what those vulnerabilities mean for your business.

On 8 October, international cybersecurity agencies detailed how China-linked threat actors combine automated scanning with hands-on intrusion techniques to steal sensitive data. The U.S. Department of Justice also announced action against infrastructure supporting vulnerability-scanning and spear-phishing tools operated by Integrity Technology Group.

For security and application leaders, the questions are immediate: Are we exposed? Which applications matter most? Where should we focus our response?

IBM Concert® Protect helps organizations move from threat awareness to action: connecting vulnerability findings with application context, helping teams prioritize risk and accelerating remediation through automated workflows.

The advisory identifies eight exploited CVEs spanning 2014 through 2023. The lesson is clear: attackers don’t need a newly discovered vulnerability when an older weakness still offers a viable entry point.

A list of CVEs, however, provides only part of the picture. Organizations need to understand where affected software exists, which applications depend on it and how those applications relate to their operational priorities.

IBM Concert Protect correlates ingested vulnerability findings with applications, components and environments. That context helps teams understand the relevance of an advisory to their own estate, not simply whether a vulnerability appears in a scanner’s report.

The result is a more informed response: visibility into affected applications and a clearer basis for deciding where attention is needed.

When vulnerability backlogs are large, treating every finding as equally urgent dilutes the response. Severity alone doesn’t capture the context in which a vulnerability exists.

IBM Concert Protect incorporates factors, such as network exposure, criticality and global evidence of exploitation, into its risk scoring. This process helps teams prioritize findings, according to their application context, and focus remediation effort where it matters most.

For organizations responding to this advisory, it means moving beyond “Which CVEs do we have?” toward “Which affected applications should we address first?”

For supported critical applications, the new proof-of-exploitability capability in IBM Concert Protect goes deeper: it evaluates whether vulnerabilities and exposures can be exploited in the context of the application’s source code and deployment configuration. Evidence-backed verdicts give teams a stronger basis for remediation decisions than severity scores alone.

That confidence matters when protecting applications the business depends on. Teams can focus their investigation and engineering effort on findings supported by application-specific evidence, rather than relying only on generalized assessments.

Proof of exploitability adds depth where it’s most valuable, complementing the broader vulnerability visibility and prioritization of IBM Concert Protect.

Understanding risk is only valuable when it leads to action.

IBM Concert Protect supports automated ticket creation in connected systems, such as Jira, GitHub and ServiceNow, helping move prioritized findings into established remediation processes. For supported targets, configured workflows can apply approved patches or upgrades and track execution status. Proof-of-exploitability findings can also be brought into IBM Concert Secure Coder for remediation within the IDE.

These capabilities help bridge the gap between identifying a problem and addressing it, giving teams a more consistent path from prioritized findings to remediation, with visibility into progress.

The campaign also includes credential abuse, persistence and data theft. Those techniques require identity security, monitoring and incident-response capabilities alongside vulnerability management. IBM Concert Protect addresses the vulnerability exposure and remediation portion of that response; it doesn’t replace detection or containment.

Its value is concrete: help organizations understand which applications are affected, focus on the findings that warrant attention, build confidence in critical application decisions and move remediation forward.

As attackers scale their search for weaknesses, organizations need more than additional alerts. They need application context, defensible priorities and a path to action. That’s where IBM Concert Protect can help.
