Espressif Systems today announced ESP RainMaker Neo, a new open-source implementation of the ESP RainMaker IoT platform for building connected products with Espressif devices.
Built on AWS Serverless architecture, ESP RainMaker Neo provides a complete device-to-cloud-to-phone app stack, including the cloud backend, firmware SDK, firmware examples, phone app SDK, and reference phone app. The platform is designed to be deployed in the user’s own AWS account, giving developers, makers, startups, system integrators, OEMs, and enterprises control over their infrastructure, data, access policies, integrations, and operational lifecycle. By using serverless cloud services, ESP RainMaker Neo helps simplify deployment and operations while supporting scalability as connected-device fleets grow.
ESP RainMaker Neo can be used as a complete IoT cloud platform for production deployments. By making the full stack open source, Espressif aims to encourage broader community participation, faster innovation, and easier customization across the connected-product development lifecycle.
ESP RainMaker Neo will be released under the Apache License 2.0, making it a truly open-source platform while preserving flexibility for commercial and enterprise adoption.
For organizations that require additional operational support, governance, analytics, and fleet-management capabilities, Espressif will offer optional paid support and enterprise modules. These include ESP Insights integration, Admin SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, managed upgrades, business analytics, support SLAs, and other capabilities required by larger commercial deployments.

Existing ESP RainMaker deployments continue to be supported. The current ESP RainMaker platform will now be referred to as ESP RainMaker Classic, reflecting its proven implementation that has been used by customers in production. ESP RainMaker Neo is not a forced migration path or replacement requirement for ESP RainMaker Classic users. Current customers can continue operating their existing deployments with confidence, while evaluating ESP RainMaker Neo for new product development where an open-source implementation is preferred.
For teams already familiar with ESP RainMaker, ESP RainMaker Neo preserves a highly aligned development experience. The firmware SDK and phone app SDK remain very similar, making it easier to develop new connected products while retaining the familiar ESP RainMaker programming model.
