Most brands evaluate their affiliate program by the sales it drives. But in AI search, affiliate marketing also performs a second job: building AI visibility for your brand.
When someone asks ChatGPT or Google AI Mode which product to choose, the answer draws heavily on third-party reviews, roundups, and comparisons — the exact content affiliates publish. In Semrush's own affiliate program, roughly one in five partnered articles about Semrush is cited in tracked AI answers.
But, it’s not the link that earns you the visibility, though. It’s the content around it that helps get you mentioned.
This guide covers why affiliate content shapes AI answers, which types of partner content get cited (based on data from our program), and a five-step workflow for turning affiliate partnerships into AI visibility.
Why affiliate marketing matters for AI visibility
Affiliate marketing matters for AI visibility because AI systems build their answers largely from third-party content, and affiliates publish a lot of it.
When AirOps analyzed 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, 85% came from external domains rather than the brand's own site. Nearly 90% of those third-party mentions came from listicles, comparisons, or reviews.
The overlap makes sense. Affiliates specialize in the types of content people consult when they evaluate products:
- "Best [category]" roundups
- "[Brand] vs. [competitor]" comparisons
- Product reviews
- Alternatives pages
- Tutorials that show how to get a task done with a specific product
Buyers now ask AI tools those same questions in conversational form, like "What's the best project management tool for a small remote team?" or "How do I find keywords my competitors rank for?" AI systems answer by retrieving the pages that already compare the options or walk through the task.
That doesn't mean an affiliate relationship alone will make AI systems more likely to cite a page. The content does the work: A detailed comparison that explains when to choose your product gives AI systems useful context. A coupon code with a link doesn't.
Which affiliate content gets cited in AI answers?
Listicles and comparisons are the affiliate content most often cited in AI answers, based on data from Semrush's own affiliate program.
To find out, we checked 2,850 pieces our partners published about Semrush against the AI answers we track with Semrush AI visibility monitoring, from September 14 to October 7, 2026. About 22% were cited in at least one tracked AI answer. Rates varied by platform: about 8% of partner pieces were cited in Google AI Overviews, 7% in Google AI Mode, 2% in Gemini, and 1% in ChatGPT.
We then read 302 cited web pages and 283 cited videos to see what they have in common. Here’s what we found.
Listicles and comparisons get cited most
Listicles and comparisons get cited by AI far more often than any other affiliate format:
Format
Listicles and top lists
About 54%
Comparisons
About 39%
Tutorials
About 21%
Reviews
About 18%
Coupon and free-trial pages
About 10%
Brands that only recruit roundup publishers leave a valuable format on the table:

Cited pages show your brand next to competitors
Cited affiliate pages usually place your brand next to competitors, and partner content that honestly compares you against alternatives is an asset. About three in four AI-cited web pages that mention Semrush also name at least one competitor, and 60% name two or more. Among uncited pages, 42% mention a competitor.
That matches how buyers use AI tools. Commercial prompts ask for options, so AI answers draw on pages that already weigh them.
So, there's no reason to ask partners to drop disclosures or skip link attributes. Have them follow the Federal Trade Commission's disclosure rules and Google's guidance on qualifying outbound links, and put the effort into the content itself.
Not every affiliate is equally valuable for AI visibility
Affiliates differ in how much they actually say about your product, so some are more valuable than others.
Coupon and cashback sites can drive plenty of transactions. But a page that lists a discount code tells an AI system almost nothing about who your product is for or why someone should choose it. In our program data, coupon and free-trial pages were the least-cited format (at about 10%).
Editorial partners work differently. Their content explains when and why someone should pick your brand, which is the context AI systems rely on to mention and recommend it:
Affiliate type
What they typically publish
What it gives AI systems
Coupon and cashback sites
Discount codes and deal listings
Little beyond price and availability
Editorial publishers
Roundups, comparisons, and buying guides
Your brand positioned against alternatives
Niche experts and bloggers
Use-case guides and in-depth reviews
Who your product is best for, and why
Reviewers
Hands-on reviews and tests
First-hand detail on features and results
Video creators

The affiliate-to-AI-visibility flywheel
The affiliate-to-AI-visibility flywheel is a compounding cycle: partner content earns your brand mentions in AI answers, and that visibility attracts more partners who create more content.
The cycle has five stages:
- You recruit affiliates and creators who publish in-depth content about your category
- They publish roundups, comparisons, reviews, and tutorials that mention your brand
- AI systems gain more independent sources to draw on for prompts in your category
- Your brand appears as a mention or a recommendation in more AI answers
- That visibility attracts new partners, since products with existing demand are easier to promote
Each step builds on the last. One sponsored review might get cited for a handful of prompts. A network of partners covering different use cases, audiences, and comparisons gives AI systems many independent sources that describe your brand.
Affiliate content also tends to stay current because partners earn from it by keeping it up to date. That makes it a durable complement to digital PR for AI visibility, which earns coverage campaign by campaign.
That also lowers the bar for earning coverage beyond your partner network. Alexandra Tachalova, founder of Digital Olympus and a former marketing director at Semrush, now builds her off-page work around brand mentions:
"I now focus on unlinked brand mentions. Links are harder to deliver because editors see a link as a valuable asset. You're sharing your site's authority. But you can go to an editor and say, 'Look, I don't even need a link, just a brand mention.' Whenever you ask for a brand mention, everyone is very chill. AI tools don't really differentiate whether it's a link or just a brand mention."

How to use affiliate partnerships to build AI visibility
Start from the prompts your buyers ask, find the sources AI systems cite for them, and then recruit and equip partners to earn coverage there.
The five steps below follow one running example: a customer relationship management (CRM) software brand that wants to show up when small sales teams ask AI tools for recommendations.
1. Choose the prompts that matter to your business
Identify prompts that match how your buyers compare and pick products. Those are the answers that draw on the roundups, comparisons, and reviews affiliates publish.
For the CRM brand, a starting set might include:
- "Best CRM for small sales teams"
- "[Your brand] vs. [competitor]"
- "[Competitor] alternatives"
- "How to automate sales follow-ups in a CRM"
To expand that list, open Prompt Research in Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit. It surfaces AI search topics in your category, along with their volume, difficulty, and intent.
Then, add your priority prompts to Prompt Tracking, which monitors your brand's visibility for each prompt daily.
2. Find the sources AI systems already cite
To find the sources AI systems already rely on, review the answers for each tracked prompt and record every domain they cite.
Log each cited domain in a spreadsheet with:
- The prompts that cite it
- The content format (listicle, comparison, review, tutorial, or other)
- Whether it mentions your brand, your competitors, or both
- Whether it's already in your affiliate program
You can use Semrush to do this more efficiently and at scale. Sources are tagged automatically in Prompt Tracking in the “Sources” tab.
Next, run Competitor Research in the AI Visibility Toolkit. It shows prompts and topics where competitors get cited and you don't, which adds sources your own tracked prompts may have missed.

3. Recruit partners who publish the type of content AI systems use
Recruit the publishers that AI answers already cite for your prompts first. Work through your source list in this order:
- Cited publishers that mention competitors but not you: These are your biggest gaps, since AI systems already trust their content in your category
- Cited publishers that mention you but aren't partners: A partnership gives them better information to work with and a reason to keep covering you, and even rank you higher on their list
- Uncited publishers of listicles, comparisons, and tutorials in your category: These formats get cited most often, so they're your pipeline for future prompts
When you reach out, lead with the evidence. Telling a publisher that their CRM roundup appears in AI answers for "best CRM for small sales teams" shows you've done the research and explains why the partnership matters to you.
Look beyond websites, too. Video creators who publish walkthroughs and comparisons can earn citations as well.
4. Equip partners without controlling the narrative
Equip partners with accurate information and hands-on product access, then let them form their own conclusions. Specific, first-hand detail is what separates a useful comparison from a generic one.
To that end, give your affiliate partners:
- Current product details, pricing, and plan limits
- Demo or trial accounts so they can test the product themselves
- Original data and benchmarks they can cite
- Access to product experts for questions
- Clear positioning on who your product is best for and where it isn't the right fit
- Real customer use cases, shared with permission
Skip scripted copy, and don't ask partners to leave competitors out. Identical messaging across dozens of sites adds little new information, and cited affiliate pages usually compare several options anyway.
Instead, encourage partners to share first-hand results and detailed comparisons. The same principles behind LLM optimization apply to their content: clear headings, specific claims, and direct answers likely make passages easier for AI systems to retrieve and use.
5. Measure AI visibility alongside revenue
Measure AI visibility alongside revenue, because even partners who only drive a few sales can influence what AI answers say about your brand.
For your priority prompts, track these three metrics:
- Partner citations: Which partner pages AI answers cite for your tracked prompts
- Brand mention rate: The share of tracked commercial prompts where AI answers mention your brand
- Brand associations: Which products, features, and use cases AI answers connect to your brand
Prompt Tracking covers the first two metrics. For associations, use Brand Performance, which analyzes your share of voice, sentiment, and the key narratives AI answers attach to your brand.
Then, compare each partner's revenue with its contribution to AI visibility. Partners that drive modest sales but get cited for high-value prompts are strategically valuable, even if your commission reports undersell them.

Affiliates can unlock greater AI visibility, not just conversions
Your affiliate program likely already shapes what AI answers say about your brand. The difference is whether you manage it.
Start by picking the prompts that matter to your business and seeing which sources AI systems cite for them. Then, recruit and equip the partners behind those sources, and measure their impact on visibility, not just revenue.
