If you ship small, heavy packages with USPS, cubic pricing lets you pay for the size of the box and the distance it travels instead of its weight. It covers Priority Mail Cubic (up to 0.5 cubic feet) and USPS Ground Advantage Cubic (up to 1 cubic foot) for packages up to 20 lb: on Shippo, a 15 lb box in the 0.3 tier shipped from San Francisco to Denver costs $9.06 with Ground Advantage Cubic. This cheat sheet shows how to find your tier and when cubic beats weight-based rates.

What is USPS cubic pricing?
Standard USPS pricing charges by weight. Cubic pricing charges for the space the package occupies and the distance it travels, and for a dense package that price is lower. It applies to two services: Priority Mail Cubic (1–3 day delivery) and Ground Advantage Cubic (2–5 day delivery). Once a package is heavy enough for its box, extra weight stops adding cost: on Shippo, a 6-lb and a 15-lb package in the same 0.3-tier box to Denver both cost $9.06 with Ground Advantage Cubic.
Shipping zones measure distance from origin to destination: Zone 1 is local, Zone 8 is coast-to-coast. The farther a package travels, the more it costs. Lighter packages can still cost less by weight, so the rate you pay is the lower of the two.
For anyone shipping books, candles, supplements, or hardware, you pay for the box, not what’s inside it.
What is USPS Ground Advantage Cubic?
USPS Ground Advantage Cubic is the cubic price for USPS Ground Advantage, the Postal Service's ground service, which USPS estimates at 2–5 days. USPS prices the package by its cubic tier and zone instead of its weight, for boxes up to 1 cubic foot and 20 lb with no side longer than 22 inches (DMM 283.1.3). It's a Commercial price, available through shipping software such as Shippo.
It has ten tiers instead of Priority Mail Cubic’s five, so boxes between 0.5 and 1 cubic foot still get cubic pricing. On Shippo, the same 15 lb box in the 0.3 tier costs $9.06 with Ground Advantage Cubic and $14.67 with Priority Mail Cubic from San Francisco to Denver, with delivery in 2–5 days instead of 1–3. Soft packs and padded envelopes follow the same length-plus-width tiers as Priority Mail and top out at the 0.5 tier (36 inches).
Ground Advantage Cubic rates on Shippo
Prices rise with the tier and the zone. Here's what Shippo returned for a 15 lb box in five tiers:
Shippo rates pulled Oct. 12, 2026, for a 15 lb package shipped from ZIP 94103 (San Francisco, CA) to ZIP 90024 (Los Angeles, CA), 80202 (Denver, CO) and 10118 (New York, NY). Your rate will vary by origin, destination, weight and dimensions.
At Zone 5, each tier adds roughly 55 cents to $1 (the table skips some tiers), so an oversized box adds cost on every order.
When Ground Advantage Cubic beats weight-based pricing
USPS keeps both prices for Ground Advantage: by weight and by cubic tier. Light packages usually cost less by weight, and heavy ones less by tier. In Shippo you see one Ground Advantage rate for the package, and it's already the lower of the two. These are the Shippo rates for two boxes shipped to Denver (Zone 5):
Shippo Ground Advantage rates pulled Oct. 12, 2026, from ZIP 94103 to ZIP 80202.
From 6 lb, the smaller box ships at the 0.3-tier cubic price of $9.06, all the way to 20 lb. The larger box needs more weight: at 10 lb the weight-based price is still lower, and from 12 lb it holds at the cubic $14.08. The bigger the box, the heavier it has to be before Ground Advantage Cubic pays off. You can check both for your own box with a free Shippo account.
Who qualifies for USPS cubic rates?
USPS sells cubic prices only through commercial channels, such as approved PC Postage shipping software, postage meters and permit imprint (), so you can’t buy a cubic label at a Post Office counter. With USPS shipping in Shippo, every account gets Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic from the first label, with no volume minimum.
What are the package requirements for cubic pricing?
To qualify, a package must:
- Weigh 20 lb or less
- Have no single side longer than 22 inches (raised from 18 inches on July 12, 2026, see below)
- Measure 0.5 cubic feet or less for Priority Mail Cubic, or 1 cubic foot or less for Ground Advantage Cubic
- Use a box, soft pack, or padded envelope: tubes and rolls do not qualify
How do you calculate your package’s cubic feet?
The formula is: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 1,728 = Cubic Feet
Before multiplying, round each dimension down to the nearest quarter inch. Here’s a step-by-step example:
- Measure the outside dimensions of your box: say, 8 × 5 × 6.6 inches.
- Round down each dimension to the nearest ¼ inch: 8 × 5 × 6.5 inches (only the 6.6 rounds).
- Multiply: 8 × 5 × 6.5 = 260.
- Divide by 1,728: 260 ÷ 1,728 = 0.15 cubic feet.
- Check the tier chart: this falls in the 0.2 tier, so the package qualifies.
Prefer to skip the math? Shippo’s cubic tier calculator handles it instantly.
Soft packs and padded envelopes: These are tiered by length plus width instead of volume. Measure the outside length and width of the empty soft pack, round each down to the nearest ¼ inch, and add them. Up to 21 inches is the 0.1 tier, up to 27 is 0.2, up to 31 is 0.3, up to 34 is 0.4, and up to 36 is 0.5, the maximum. The same table applies to Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic (DMM 223.1.3, ).
What are the USPS cubic pricing tiers for 2026?
Priority Mail Cubic (1–3 day delivery)
Five tiers, capped at 0.50 cubic feet:
Ground Advantage Cubic (2–5 day delivery)
Ten tiers, extending up to a full cubic foot:
For current rates by tier and zone, use Shippo’s USPS shipping calculator. Rates vary by origin, destination, and zone.
Priority Mail Cubic vs. Ground Advantage Cubic: which should you use?
The choice mostly comes down to how fast the package needs to arrive, and whether it’s larger than half a cubic foot.
Priority Mail Cubic suits small packages that need to arrive in 1–3 days. Ground Advantage Cubic earns its place for replenishment orders, non-urgent B2B, or anything in that 0.5–1.0 cubic foot range where you’re not racing a clock. The Ground Advantage Cubic rates above show what that costs by zone. For a full breakdown of Ground Advantage as a service, see USPS Ground Advantage: Rates, Limits & How It Works. If you’re also deciding between cubic and flat rate, Priority Mail Cubic vs. Flat Rate is worth a read.
When does cubic pricing actually save you money?
Cubic wins when the package is heavy relative to its size. In the Ground Advantage example above, cubic took over at 6 lb for the small box and 12 lb for the large one. Below that, weight-based rates are lower.
Cubic pricing decouples postage from product weight. In the table above, the 0.3-tier box costs $9.06 to Denver whether it holds 6 lb or 20 lb of hardware.
Cubic doesn’t help light, bulky packages. Oversized apparel, foam-packed items and boxes that are half air rarely win on cubic, so check the rate before assuming they do.
What items benefit most from USPS cubic pricing?
The clearest winners are small and heavy: products with a lot of mass packed into a small footprint.
- Subscription boxes packed with small, heavy items
- Books, reference guides, and training manuals
- Candles, bottled goods, and supplements
- Fitness accessories and hand weights (up to 20 lb)
- Hardware, tools, and small electronics
- Jewelry, watches, and collectibles

USPS cubic pricing changes in July 2026
On July 12, 2026, in a mailing standards change, USPS raised the maximum side length for cubic pricing from 18 inches to 22 inches for both Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic (, ). Longer, machinable items now qualify: slim tech packaging, narrow rigid boxes, and similar SKUs that used to fall outside the size limit. The 20-lb weight cap and the 0.5 and 1.0 cubic foot ceilings stayed the same.
If you’ve had packages fall just outside the 18-inch limit, revisit those SKUs. Some of them are now cubic-eligible, and the cubic tier calculator shows which tier each one lands in.
The same update aligned Ground Advantage Cubic soft packs and padded envelopes with the Priority Mail soft-pack tiers. Both now use length plus width, and both top out at the 0.5 tier (36 inches).
FAQ
What is USPS cubic pricing and who is it best for?Cubic pricing sets postage by package volume and zone, not weight. It applies to Priority Mail Cubic (1–3 days, up to 0.5 cu ft) and Ground Advantage Cubic (2–5 days, up to 1.0 cu ft). It’s built for shippers with small, dense products, where weight-based rates would otherwise cost more. If you’re selling something heavy that fits in a small box, cubic is likely the lower rate.
Do I need a minimum shipping volume to qualify for cubic rates? Not with Shippo. Every account gets Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic from the first label, with no volume minimum.
How do I calculate whether my package qualifies for cubic pricing?Multiply length × width × height (each rounded down to the nearest ¼ inch), then divide by 1,728. If the result is 0.50 or under, the package weighs 20 lb or less and no single side exceeds 22 inches, your package qualifies for Priority Mail Cubic. Results up to 1.00 cubic foot qualify for Ground Advantage Cubic.
What changed in July 2026 for USPS cubic pricing? On July 12, 2026, USPS raised the maximum side length from 18 to 22 inches for both Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic, so longer packages that used to miss the limit now qualify. Ground Advantage soft packs and padded envelopes now follow the Priority Mail soft-pack tiers, topping out at the 0.5 tier (36 inches length plus width).
What’s the difference between Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic?Priority Mail Cubic delivers in 1–3 days with a 0.5 cubic foot maximum. Ground Advantage Cubic takes 2–5 days but supports packages up to 1.0 cubic foot. Both cap out at 20 lb. Choose Priority Mail Cubic when speed matters; Ground Advantage Cubic when cost or package size tips the balance.
Does Ground Advantage Cubic include tracking and insurance?Yes. USPS includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance on Ground Advantage Commercial packages, which covers Ground Advantage Cubic.
Why don’t I see “Cubic” as a separate service in Shippo?USPS prices Priority Mail and Ground Advantage either by weight or by cubic tier, so Shippo lists the two services rather than a separate cubic one. Enter your box dimensions, or choose the Soft Pack package template for a poly mailer, and the rates you see use cubic pricing when it’s lower.
